‘Don’t make us repeat No Nukes 100 times!’ ~ Friday Protest at Prime Minister’s Office

A woman raised a handwritten sign that read, “Don’t make us repeat ‘No Nukes’ 100 times!” toward the Prime Minister’s Office on May 2. The No Nukes Protest on Friday in front of the Prime Minister’s Office marked 100 times since March 2012.  On June 29, 2012, the Diet building was surrounded by 200,000 demonstrators who opposed the restart of Oi nuclear power plant.  Although the number of participants in the demonstration has decreased ever since, about 2,000 people gather around the Diet building every Friday night. “We must not kill the movement against nukes.”  Demonstrators, who got to know each other in this action, gathered to confirm this. Young and old, parents with children—many participate in the protest for the first time and mingle with full-throttled middle-aged and senior demonstrators.  Though a protest against nuclear energy, some signs that read, “We are against revision of the constitution,” “We oppose the state secrets law,” “We oppose TPP,” “Don’t discriminate against Okinawa or Fukushima,” have also become prominent.  Those actions are connected to the protests against restart of the nuclear power plant.  It’s been two full years since the Friday protest started, the movement continues to expand throughout the country.  (Shinya)

(shinya)
